There are five infill families worth knowing: silica sand (the budget default for ornamental lawns), rounded coated quartz (the durable all-arounder), organic infills like cork and walnut shell (the cool-surface option), zeolite (the odor-control specialist for pet yards), and crumb rubber (the shock absorber for sports fields, rarely right at home). Every residential system needs 2-3 pounds of infill per square foot; the only real question is which material, and that depends on dogs, kids, sun, and budget.
Infill is the least visible line on your quote and one of the most consequential. It ballasts the turf so panels cannot shift or wrinkle in summer heat, props each blade upright so the lawn does not mat flat in traffic lanes, shields the backing from UV, and - depending on the material - controls odor and surface temperature. I have seen more turf problems caused by the wrong infill, or too little of it, than by the turf itself. Here is each type, what it does well, and where I actually spec it.
Silica Sand: The Baseline
Angular washed silica sand is the cheapest infill on the truck and it does the core jobs fine: weight, blade support, UV protection for the backing. For a front-yard lawn that gets looked at more than walked on, silica sand at 2-3 pounds per square foot is a perfectly good spec, and it is what the $5 per square foot economy installs almost always carry.
Its limits show up under heavier use. The angular grains lock together and compact over time, which can slow drainage and stiffen the surface, and sand is porous enough to hold urine residue - which is why plain silica in a dog yard is the single most common cause of the summer smell that gives cheap pet installs a bad name. It also does nothing for surface temperature. Fine for ornamental lawns; wrong for pets; marginal for heavy play areas.
Rounded Coated Quartz: The Workhorse Upgrade
Rounded quartz granules with a baked-on acrylic coating - sold under several brand families - fix most of silica's weaknesses. The rounded shape resists compaction so the system stays permeable and slightly softer underfoot, the coating seals the grain so there is nowhere for bacteria to live, and many versions bond an antimicrobial into that coating. It brushes up more easily during maintenance and is gentler on skin, which matters where kids play barefoot.
This is my default recommendation for family lawns and the ballast half of most pet systems. It costs a few times more than plain sand per bag, but spread across a typical 500 square foot yard the upgrade is usually a few hundred dollars on a project starting around $8 per square foot for mid-grade turf - small money for a surface you will live on for 15 years. If the budget only allows one upgrade over an economy bid, this is the one I would take.
Organic Infills: Cork and Walnut Shell
Organic infills - cork granules and crushed walnut shell are the common ones - exist to solve heat. Mineral infills absorb and store solar heat; organics hold moisture and shed heat faster, so a lawn dressed with cork runs noticeably cooler barefoot on a July afternoon. For unshaded yards in California, Arizona, and Texas, that can be the difference between a lawn the kids use at 3 p.m. and one they avoid until sunset.
The trade-offs are honest ones: organics are lighter, so they can float or migrate in hard downpours and need topping up more often than minerals; they slowly break down and get replenished every few years; and walnut shell is off the table if anyone in the house has a tree-nut allergy. Most installers blend organics over a base layer of sand or coated quartz - mineral for ballast down low, organic up top for the cool touch. Spec the blend, not a pure organic fill, and it behaves well.
Zeolite: The Odor Specialist
Zeolite is a honeycomb-structured volcanic mineral that traps ammonia compounds from dog urine and holds them until a hose rinse or a good rain flushes it clean - a recharge cycle you can repeat for the life of the lawn. It is the single most effective thing you can put in a turf system for odor, which is why it anchors nearly every serious pet install, typically blended with coated quartz for weight since zeolite is light and soft on its own.
Where I spec it: any yard with dogs, full stop, concentrated in the potty zones at minimum. Pet systems built this way start around $10 per square foot installed and it is the best-spent $2 in the business. Where I skip it: dog-free lawns, where it adds cost without adding anything you can feel. One field note for dry climates - zeolite works by holding, not destroying, ammonia, so in a rain-free summer you have to run the recharge rinse yourself or the mineral eventually fills up.
Crumb Rubber: For Fields, Not Backyards
Crumb rubber - recycled tire granules - dominates sports fields because it is springy, cheap in bulk, and absorbs impact under cleats. In a backyard it is almost always the wrong call: it gets hotter than any mineral infill in the sun, it can carry a tire smell in warm weather, black granules track indoors on socks and paws, and it does nothing for pet odor. The one residential use case I will sign off on is a dedicated backyard sports pad or playground area where fall attenuation genuinely matters, and even there, coated alternatives or a padded shock layer under the turf usually do the job cleaner.

How Much Infill You Need - and the Corner Cheap Bids Cut
Whatever the material, plan on 2-3 pounds per square foot, worked down between the blades with a power broom in multiple passes - on a 500 square foot lawn that is roughly half a ton of material, not a few decorative bags. Under-filling is a favorite trick on lowball bids because the lawn looks identical on day one. By month six the tell is obvious: blades matting flat in the walk lanes, wrinkles creeping in along the sunny edge where unballasted turf expanded, and backing wearing early under UV. Ask every bidder two questions - which infill, and how many pounds per square foot - and make sure both answers are on the contract.
